How Do Nudist Resorts Deal With Erections?
The idea that men at nudist resorts have a great deal of trouble avoiding erections is a myth. One nudist said, "Erections are quite rare, even for first timers." Another nudist said, "I haven't seen one in two decades."

According to Scarlett Schmitt, co-owner of the family-owned
Ponderosa Sun Club in Roselawn, Indiana, "The camp does have ways to deal with those situations. If a man becomes aroused or is staring at others, most of the time he's given a chance to control himself or stop gawking. On the second offense, he's asked to leave. This happens a handful of times a summer." This is the official policy of the Ponderosa Sun Club:

A public erection is not acceptable. 99% of men do not experience this problem. If you happen to be in that 1%, we suggest that you cover up with a towel or take a discreet cold shower until it subsides.

The American Association for Nude Recreation is the largest organization of its kind in North America, with approximately 50,000 members throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and beyond. According to
The American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR):

Q: Do males get visibly excited?

A: Not often. Nudist clubs are far less sexually charged than places where bikinis, thongs, or other provocative clothing, are worn. On the rare occasion where this occurs, simply don a towel, turn over, or take a quick dip in the pool.

According to an article entitled "Why nudists don't get erections" by Peter Doskoch:

Lawrence Casler, of the State University of New York at Geneseo, studied 115 nudists, removing his own clothes to minimize defensiveness or false responses. One of his major findings: Nudists are not sexually aroused by the sight of unclad bodies. Why don't nudists react as we expect them to? Casler believes that sexual arousal is a learned response to nudity and that the naked body arouses us only under certain conditions. Anthropologists do not report unusual promiscuity or a higher birth rate among habitually naked primitive tribes; nor is there any other sign that such groups are more sexually active than their clothed neighbors.

Under what conditions, then, is the unclad body an erotic object? The answer seems simple. In non-nudist life, we see the opposite sex undressed during love making, and conditioning causes nudity tobecome associated with sexual excitement or behavior. Nudists, on the other hand, associate the naked body with volleyball. The body becomes deconditioned as a sexual stimulus.

Male nudists have reported, however, that immediately upon leaving the nudist camp they are stimulated by women wearing ordinary clothes (Excerpted from the article "Nudity," by Leonard Blank from 'Psychology Today' dated June 1969).

it is not being honest trying to conceal a boner. I think nudists are warped perverts of a different kind.

According to these rather hypocritical groups, nude is okay just as long as a man's erection isn't showing. Basically, for those of you who don't know, if a man or boy has an erection in a nudist group, it is considered "good manners" to cover it up, and poor etiquette to allow it to show.

I can't even begin to fathom why on Earth men would ever even consider submitting to this rather bizarre rule. While I do have desire to be a nudist, I think that this particular rule is a joke.

About the only thing I can come up with as to why this particular duplicitous rule exists is because perhaps the men in the group have been unconsciously trained to be docile, like house broken pets. An erect penis is a sign of power and virility in a man. So in a group that supposedly embraces nudity, while chiding their male members to cover up an erection, it is apparent to me that these people must strangely view the male erection as a sign of the patriarchal, right wing philosophy that looks down on nudists. So lol these rather strange folks feel that full nudity is okay, just not really for men, since an erection showing is an integral part of a man's nudity. Honestly? I believe that in this way nudists have adopted a policy that subtly persecutes men.

If you can accept a man's nude body, why can't the whole body be accepted.

Women are not asked to cover their nipples when they become erect.

For a society to be accepting, it sure is sexist.

Aaaw... Just calm down and appreciate the little boys who walk up to you on the beach with their little erections and stand over you talking for 15 minutes while you lie on your towel. Good thing to carry an extra bit of lotion for when that happens.

To anon (12/3/12), I'm sure it has nothing to do with sexism. The point is that there are surely men out there who will go to nudist resorts just to stare and gawk at all the naked women. They will be intentionally aroused, and their lewd behavior will disrupt everyone's time.

Erections are a natural part of being a man, and sometimes they can't be helped, but I think the only times I've ever gotten them without consciously thinking about it was due to the sensation caused by clothes. Since that doesn't really happen when you're nude, there's nothing to worry about.

For men who aren't there to gawk and stare, getting an erection is probably pretty embarrassing. Most would want to hide it if it was an accident.

As for erect female nipples, nipple erection tissue is related to goosebumps that you get all over your body. It CAN be stimulated by sexual contact, but a simple cold breeze can do the same—for men and women. But there are other physical signs that women have that show when they're aroused, and I'm sure they are just as discouraged.

Being a male nudist I had erection problem too...First it was embarrassing and it was towel time too...Carrying a towel around got a bit embarrassing too...One day i forgot my wrap around towel...I now limp.. Unless my sweatheart arouses me sexually..

The male enhancement exercises are techniques that stimulate new tissue formation. There are various different possibilities – stretching, jelqing, kegel exercises and ballooning are just a few of the possible option.

im just getting in to the whole nudist thing and even i dont agree with this, i havent yet taken part in nudist activities but im enquiring about one a few minutes away from my house, the idea of being a nudist is to accept nature, its natural to get erect, and if i got erect while i was taking part in a nudist event then i wouldnt be embarrassed or anything i would just go about like i wasnt hard, its the people that aint real nudists that only do it to boost their confidence ect' that decided to make the rule that there is to be no hard ons in the nudist area, if someone was just sat in a corner starin at some lasses racks and tossing them selves off then its obvious theyve only come for one reason and yh they should be forced to leave

Family oriented nudist resorts are very sensitive to accusations of being sex fiends and perverts, so any sign of sexual arousal is a big no-no.
Swinger resorts are the ones where arousal and sexual activity is acceptable. They generally do not allow anyone under the age of consent in the jurisdiction where the resort is located.

This is a subject I have puzzled over for quite some time now. I am a male and I feel very proud when I become erect. I have tried many times to stop an erection from happening because I am rather large and when I m aroused I can't hide it unless I sit down or just cover up. Which is rather obvious to all because something is going on that causes an erection to happen. However unless you are a male you have no idea about the normal actions of a mans penis. Not all of the time but there are times that erections just happen for no apparent reason. and as quickly as they come on they go away. I recently spent time in a hospital due to a heart attack. Never experiencing a heart attack prior to this I had no idea what tests they routinely performed to both men and women. Early in the morning my assistant nurse came into the room and let me know that I was scheduled to have a heart cath done . It didn't bother me until she informed she was there to prep me and then she told me what the prep was.She had to shave my groin area because that is the area they go into the artery at. She was very young and pretty. She removed my blankets and undressed me my undershorts and all. Leaving me exposed she washed my groin area as well as my penis and testicles. As embarrassing as this was it was even worse because she had to handle everything in order to clean and shave me. I tried as hard as I could to stop my erection but there was no way I could. I apologised over and again and she tried to assure me that it was a natural reaction and it didn't bother her. Now you're saying well she had to touch him. That didn't matter because a few months later I had to have a testicular ultrasound and even though the woman tech never touched me There was no way I could keep myself from becoming erect. I don't want to ear that you just control it because you just can't do it. If a mans body wants to become erect it will happen no matter what the man wants. So if telling me that I must control my body is your answer I think someone needs to rethink just what your asking a man to do and just how much more embarrasing the sitsuation is because I'm going to be removed from my vacation spot because of a normal body function then I guess I just don't need to be there. I'll go to a nude beach or a place that has more control over their minds than to throw me out.If you and your family including children are so offended at an erection then maybe you are not a true nudist or maybe your rules that were written back in the sixties no longer have a place in the real world of today. Just because I have an erection does not mean I am going to hunt you down and rape you. It simply means that I became erect over something or maybe even nothing. Why on earth would a woman become offended because I have an erection. Grow up all of you people lets get a check on reality and rethink this situation.

This seems to be the #1 question from males. Erections from sexual arousal are rare at family-friendly naturist resorts. But we do understand males get spontaneous nonsexual erections especially in the morning. It's nothing to be ashamed of or comment about. Others ignore it as long as you don't draw attention to yourself or do anything that would make others uncomfortable. Do you ever feel you want to get out of bed and join your family for breakfast but you're too embarrassed because you have an erection? It will go away in time if you just get up. Your body is no one else's business anyway. Trying to hide it makes you appear shameful, sneaky or dishonest. Naturism is based on body acceptance and the belief the human body is not shameful. Whether it's a medical condition, an implant or just being a healthy male, it's your behavior that matters.

A resort I know of has a policy that if a male gets an election he us to cover it with a towel, roll over (on a pool-side type chair), or take a cold shower until it goes away.

Now some males may find this to be a shameful rule because of virility, etc as mentioned above. However as a female, my understanding is that an erection is generally thought of as a sexual thing. So I believe this rule is put into place to keep everyone comfortable, especially at family nudist resorts. Basically my opinion is if you don't like the rules, then it's not a place for you.

I think it's time everyone took a little time and researched ERECTIONS. Lets start with the amount of times a day a man thinks about sex. We all know it is a countless number with no relevance because we almost never act on that impulse and the amount of actual erections we get because of this is very small. Most erections accour without provocation. That does not mean that a beautiful woman that appeals to us wont cause us to become erect because they will. It is a perfectly natural reaction. Women were designed to bare children and males are by design put on earth to impregnate females. Lets all stop for a second and think about that because as much as women hate to think that way it is 100 percent the truth. If I looked at a woman and there was no reaction by my penis then it would be impossible for women to bear children because we as men would not be able to plant our seed at all. Believe me I have tried and it does not work. So the next time you see a man with an erection forget how you feel and thank God for that erection because without it there would be no children for all you mommies to raise and nurture. So grow up you bunch of babies and think of how we feel because of you uneducated fools that can't except that we can do nothing to change a perfectly normal body function.

I forgot to mention to all that if you feel embarrassed for your daughter then perhaps you haven't taught them the right way to act if this happens to her. Maybe she God forbid just turned her head and didn't stare then there wouldn't be a problem at all. Maybe it's your fault as a nudist that you didn't prepare her for the nudist community. Maybe you should have sat her down at some point and explained what happens to a man and why it happens instead of scaring the hell out of her about an erection. No it's much easier to blame the male for it rather than to face your kids and tell them about sex. Just because you fell short of your responsibilities as a nudist parent is no reason to embarrass the heck out of me. I can't do anything to stop an erection so why do I have to try to hide something with a towel or a cold shower which is totally ridiculous I hate cold showers and it is a big shock to my body the same as it is to your body but hey you don't care, just get rid of that damned erection. The nudist community needs to rethink their position on erections from a modern standpoint if nothing is going to change their minds they need to retire. In the mean time I'm headed to a nude beach as well.

The "family friendly" nudist community has tried for a long time to convince the public that nudism is nonsexual. Not that nudists/naturists don't have sex like anyone else, but that naturism isn't motivated by sex.
Erections are sexual. The erectile muscles of the penis exercise themselves to keep in shape for sexual intercourse whether or not the man is anticipating having sex shortly.
When a man sees an attractive woman, his natural inclination is to have sex with her. We are socialized not to act on sexual impulses in non-socially-acceptable manners. But many people, many nudists included, think that every erection expresses an active hope to have sex relations.
Then there is the real problem of so-called child molesting. It is commonly defined as any sexual expression toward a person who is below the "age of consent." Legal definitions are scattered from 7 to 18. Then social definitions are all over the place even within a society or community. There are even laws in some jurisdictions that forbid people having sex, or cohabiting (living together in a manner conducive to having sex), with no exception made for those who are legally married according to another jurisdiction. Example: A man and his 15 year old wife, who are legally married from a state where a 15 year old can marry, travel through or move to another state that has an age of consent of 16. They are forbidden to stay in the same motel room or to live in the same home. In the same jurisdiction unmarried couples can have sex when not married to one another as long as neither is under 16. These kinds of situations are rarely prosecuted since they do not often come to the attention of prosecutors, and even if they do, many prosecutors are not interested in prosecuting them. But the law is on the lawbooks and the potential is there for a prosecution.
Then, many people find a 30 year old man married to a 15, etc. old woman disgusting while some of these people think unmarried 15 or 16 year olds having sex is "cute" or "darling."
So much of the nudist community goes to great lengths in efforts to stay far away from the image of sexuality, especially "child molesting," whatever that means to different people.
Imagine yourself a parent of a 14 year old girl at your "family friendly" nudist resort. She is in all her naked beauty when a 17 year old boy strikes up a conversation with her. While chatting, his penis rises and stiffens. He doesn't break off and get a towel to cover it. Does this scene make you nervous? You don't believe she is in any danger of being thrown down and raped, but are you uncomfortable nevertheless?

For the last post July 29 2016, you are an extreme sexist. Just because a young man conversates with your daughter and becomes aroused as they cannot help it, in no way means the boy is going to throw your daughter down and rape her. It seems as though these nudist/naturist areas are run by feminists who want nothing more than to shame males. I thought naturism was about accepting everything natural? My wife and I recently became interested in visiting a nudist resort, but after reading all these posts, I don't want anything to do with these shameful practices. How dare you make men feel ashamed of a God given natural event in a man's body. If your so against male erections than start feminists nazi nudist camps/resorts. You state that an erection is sexual. Seems to me your running on main stream media driven ideology, instead of embracing every being as unique and accepted as well as respected. After reading these posts it's clear this is a woman event and men are to be subordinates under feminazi rules. Completely disgusted by your ideologies of men as sexually deviants that will molest your children. What a joke!!!

Decades and maybe even centuries later. The question is still going about males and getting or not getting erections in a naturist resort.

Let me settle this once and for all. I'm a nudist male and have been since 1980. I've been to resorts and other naturist places for a long time.

Speaking strictly for my resort or camp experiences, at no time in a group of fellow nudists, have I myself ever experienced an erection. Why? because there's nothing to get 'sexually' excited about.

Yes, there's women there, of ALL kinds but they are there for for the same reason males are...to sun, swim, hike and take part in simple sporting games together. Also, sometimes we have dances as well.

Everyone there is pretty much of the same mindset, we only want to take some time to be out of clothing and be comfortable and relax around our fellow human beings. Away from society's ideas that there's something 'wrong' with it or that the human body is 'dirty'.

That's like saying God creates shameful
things, which is definetly a shameful thing to say.

Only when in the privacy of one's room (alone or with a spouse/significant other) in true sexual or shared intimatre moments, should any erection occour.

A male who cannot control himself around simple 'non-sexual' nudity, makes it 100% clear,he hasn't the maturity to see that, there's nothing to get physically excited about. Which means, they should return when they've grown up some and can emotionally & physically deal with and accept it.

Nudism, naturism and/or naturists...it's all about treating others as human beings and the people they are. As well as accepting the physical form they were created in.

I know, I've always felt more accepted in the naturist
community, than I ever did in so called 'normal' society.

I sign this anonymous because I'm more comfortable too.

That's sexist to only talk about males who can't control themselves. It also sounds very unfriendly to kick out people who aren't "good enough", when they aren't being rude or grossly perverted.

Say a and man and woman are talking together, and they find each other attractive. Is that not permitted?

Family friendly it is, but at least the rules should say no sexual engagements of any kind. I understand there have to be limitations so that nudist places aren't accused by non-nudists or families that don't totally agree with it all.

It still places more blame on a male, to avoid those situations, but at least the rules sound equal. In a true nudist colony, men getting erections shouldn't be an issue at all because females can be just as aroused or have increased blood flow, even though it is not clearly evident.

The body often sends more blood to places when it checks for circulation. This can happen by mistake, but it makes no sense in a nudist place to hide that because it is a, normal, whole body reaction.

If a man and a woman find each other attractive and want to spend time together. that's wonderful. If they're "that" attracted and both are consenting adults, then they can go to one or the others' room(s), as long as they are discreet about the physical togetherness.

Someof you are comparing a male's erection and a female's 'nipple' erection (which men have also). The two very different body parts are hardly comparable, except they do get erect. A nipple, however, will get erect from being cold, in a cool breeze are just for no reason.

Males get erect when sexually aroused. Simple nudity at a resort where people are doing nothing out in the open that is sexual either, is just being out in nature and relaxing, recreating and maybe even just trying to get a better self image of their own person.

In short, while sex between married couples and visiting couples (whatever the gender) in their rooms is fine

....true nudists do not go to resorts, camps, cololnies or beaches looking for sex. We go to be free of our clothes and even the everyday lives we have to live in the so called 'normal' world.

That world, where 'naked' instantly ='s 'sex' or else dsomeone's considered a 'pervert'. Don't forget all you men & women out there...if a man gets an erection in public, even if he's wearing clothes and someone notices....they try to have him arrested. If in school at a young age, he gets teased by his peers.

I'drather be polite and put on a towel at a resort if I ever would get an erection there, than be scorned by the people out there in everyday life, who calthemselves 'mature' adults...but at the same time, call nudity or eventhe male anatomy 'dirty'.

Again, God's creation of the human form is not dirty...only
the perverse things people do with their bodies and to others is dirty.

The human form is beauty.

I am not a nudist but I still feel I have an opinion. I am a 26 year old male and I feel that in a nudist eyes an erect penis isnt something to be looked upon as a bad thing. It should be monitored in sense of if the male with the situation is fappening then maybe regilate it. But as I read in one of the comments what if it was a 10 year old boy then what do you do. I know nudism can be a complex topic, in my opinion I feel there should be some ground rules but not the rules I read up top upon opening this website. There is a difference from a swingers resort to a nudist resort, this is true. But the whole you can't have an erection is a little too far.

I've been a nudists for over 20 years and have been to many resorts. Over the years I have seen dozens of erections, even at the 'family friendly' places.

What I have NOT seen at the family resorts are naked boys between the ages of 5 and 17. No doubt these kids keep their clothes on exactly because of the attitude of the 'feminazis' as espoused at so many beaches and resorts.

The AANR and TNS and all like-minded resorts and clubs should be aware that they are self-destructing by banning erections. Young people should be the future of all these places and by alienating 50% of them fiscal and social growth is doomed!

CARE said...

The rule about covering erections does seem to go against the belief that a nude body is beautiful. I've heard people say that a naked female body is naturally more attractive than the naked male body...but I doubt all people see it that way.

The rule seems to be sending the message that an erection is something to be embarrassed or ashamed about...and it's unattractive. Penises often have a mind of their own...a boner can be caused by a stiff breeze blowing on your testicles, a day or night dream, being a little horny, or for no reason that you understand.

It's not our fault that when guys get turned on it's physically noticeable. Males experience erections from birth so we should teach little boys why it happens (but not to flaunt it) and that it's not disgusting or shameful.

Agreed! I love just being free for from my clothes now and
Again but still feel trapped because I'm so alone. Being free and open dose not mean anything sexual. Nore dose all erections. As most men can tell you some times they just happen though usually just after waking up. And most often it's the biggest, hardest and lasts the longest at times. Probably automatic self maintenance to try to keep things working. But on reire occasions they can happen any time of day. With no sextual thought or intent. Most often just a feel of embarrassment and very self consciousness. Even those that have ED still often get them when they don't expect or want them.

It is best, when regarding the typical nudist resort, to treat erections like farting. It's natural and nothing to be ashamed of and yet you don't go around doing it near people if you can help it.

The national organizations are way off base with this. Thank goodness our local group has no hang ups about a hard cock. Most of us are of the age we are just happy to get hard, and don't mind others seeing it. Over the years I have been hard when nude in front of my family members, including my mom, dozens if not hundreds of times. Morning erections are a fact of life for many of us. I personally enjoy seeing other men erect. In over 40 years as a nudist, I have never seen or heard of any sexual misconduct at gatherings.

When my wife and I first visited a nudist resort, we had been there for a while, and then were relaxing in the lounge chairs at the pool. Soon, another couple also visiting laid back in lounge chairs close to us. After they had settled in, I looked over, and the woman of that couple was positioned with her feet turned in my direction, and laying completely flat. The view I had was the bottoms of her feet, directly up between her legs to her crotch, and her large breasts standing up. I immediately started feeling myself starting to get an erection, but willed myself to turn away before it became noticeable. No, I did not want to turn away, but it was the better of the two choices.
